The 4 Goals of Life (Purusharthas)

The Essence

Why is the Zodiac divided into Fire, Earth, Air, and Water? It is not merely to describe personality, but to outline the soul's four-fold curriculum. The soul does not incarnate arbitrarily; it descends to fulfill a specific cycle of evolution known as the Purusharthas. Without understanding whether a chart is driven by Duty (Dharma), Resources (Artha), Desire (Kama), or Liberation (Moksha), prediction remains superficial. We analyze the Purusharthas to answer the most fundamental question of the client: 'What is the purpose of my struggle?'

Classical Verse

"Dharmartha Kama Mokshanam Arogyam Moolamuttamam. (Charaka Samhita / Echoed in BPHS Contexts)"

Modern Translation

While often cited in Ayurveda, this foundational Sutra establishes the hierarchy of Vedic life: Dharma (Righteous Path/Identity - Houses 1, 5, 9), Artha (Wealth/Security - Houses 2, 6, 10), Kama (Desire/Relationship - Houses 3, 7, 11), and Moksha (Liberation/Letting Go - Houses 4, 8, 12). In the horoscope, these are not just abstract concepts but technical groupings. The Fire signs initiate the impulse (Dharma), Earth signs ground the energy into form (Artha), Air signs distribute the energy through social connection (Kama), and Water signs dissolve the form back into the cosmic ocean (Moksha). The placement of the majority of planets in these specific house trinities reveals the 'Soul's Agenda' for this specific lifetime.

Practical Insight

The professional secret lies in analyzing the 'Paka Lagna' (the house where the Ascendant Lord sits) in relation to the Purusharthas. Even if a person has a chart full of Raja Yogas for wealth (Artha), if their Ascendant Lord sits in a Moksha house (4, 8, or 12), they will often self-sabotage their career success because their core intelligence is driven by the need for seclusion and spiritual release. The remedy here is not to force ambition, but to spiritualize their work—bringing Moksha into their Artha.

Go Deeper

Examine your chart now. Count how many planets reside in the Dharma (1, 5, 9), Artha (2, 6, 10), Kama (3, 7, 11), and Moksha (4, 8, 12) houses. Identify the dominant group to discover your primary life focus.
