The Essence
Why do the planets have feelings? In the cosmic drama, it is not enough to know where a planet is (placement) or how strong it is (Shadbala); we must know how it feels. The Lajjitadi Avasthas reveal the psychological and emotional mood of the grahas. A King (the planet) may be on the throne (Exaltation), but if he is humiliated by scandal (Lajjita), he cannot rule effectively. These states explain the 'Why' behind a person's irrational behaviors—the unexpected shame or the sudden, overwhelming pride.
Classical Verse
"Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 45, Sloka 2: 'Yadi Putragrihe kheto Ravi-Manda-Kujair-yutah; Lajjitah sa tu vijneyah...' (If a planet is in the 5th House joined by the Sun, Saturn, or Mars, it is known as Lajjita/Shamed)."
Modern Translation
Technically, the 'Lajjita' (Shamed) state occurs when a planet is placed in the 5th House (the Bhava of intelligence and creation) and is conjunct the Sun, Saturn, or Mars. The 5th house is delicate; it represents our future and our creative output. When harsh, separative planets (Sun, Saturn, Mars) occupy this space with another planet, that planet is 'shamed' or smothered, unable to express its creativity. Conversely, 'Garvita' (Proud) occurs simply when a planet is in its Exaltation sign or Moolatrikona. This is the state of supreme confidence. While Lajjita creates a psychological block and a fear of self-expression, Garvita creates an overflow of confidence that usually leads to success, provided the pride does not turn into arrogance.
Practical Insight
The 'Secret' of the Lajjitadi Avasthas lies in their impact on the houses the planet rules, not just where it sits. If a planet is Lajjita (Shamed), it starves the houses it owns. For example, if the ruler of the 10th house is Lajjita in the 5th, your career (10th) will suffer because you lack the creative confidence (5th) to pursue it, constantly feeling 'not good enough.' The remedy is psychological alchemy: You must consciously 'feed' the Shamed planet. If Mercury is Lajjita, you must force yourself to speak and write publicly, overriding the internal shame, to unlock the prosperity of the houses Mercury rules.
