The Essence
In the West, we fear death as an error in the system. In the East, we understand it as a scheduled transition managed by specific agents. These agents are the 'Marakas' or 'Killers.' Why do the 2nd and 7th houses rule death? Because the 2nd is the sustenance that keeps us here, and the 7th is the desire that binds us here. When these resources run out, the soul is released. A Maraka planet is not 'evil'; it is simply the cosmic checkout clerk.
Classical Verse
"Dwitiya saptamadhipau marakau parikirtitau. (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra). Translation: The lords of the 2nd and 7th houses are known as the Marakas (Killers)."
Modern Translation
Technically, the 8th House is the house of Longevity (Ayur Bhava). The 12th from any house represents the loss of that house. Therefore, the 12th from the 8th is the 7th House (Loss of Longevity). Similarly, the 3rd House is also a house of life (Bhavat Bhavam of the 8th). The 12th from the 3rd is the 2nd House. Thus, the 2nd and 7th Lords are the primary determinants of death or severe illness. When a native runs the Dasha of a Maraka planet, especially if it is conjoined with Saturn (the natural significator of death), they face a 'Maraka' period—a time of physical transition or ego death.
Practical Insight
The 'Shiva' Safety Valve. The only deity who conquers death is Shiva (Mahakala). If a client is running a Maraka Dasha and facing health crises, the supreme remedy is the 'Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra.' However, the secret is that this mantra does not guarantee physical survival; it guarantees 'Victory over Death' (Mrityu-Jaya), which may mean a peaceful passing or a miraculous recovery, depending on the soul's contract. Do not promise a cure; promise fearlessness.
