The Essence
We often mistake planetary strength (Shadbala) for planetary happiness, yet they are distinct. A planet may be 'Exalted' like a king on a throne, but if that king is weeping in grief or shaking with rage, his decree will be flawed. The Lajjitadi Avasthas, specifically Mudita (Delighted) and Kshobhita (Agitated), reveal not the capacity of the planet to act, but the psychological mood in which it acts. Why does this matter? Because a weak planet that is 'Delighted' will give you little, but it will give it with love; a strong planet that is 'Agitated' may give you an empire, but it will cost you your peace of mind.
Classical Verse
"Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch. 45, Slokas 12 & 16): 'A Graha in a friendly Bhava, associated with or aspected by a friendly Graha... is stated to be Mudita (Delighted)... A Graha associated with the Sun and receiving a Drishti from, or associated with, a malefic or an enemy, is Kshobhita (Agitated).'"
Modern Translation
Technically, these Avasthas describe the resonance between a planet, its host sign, and its companions. Mudita (Delighted) occurs when a planet is in a welcoming environment (Friendly Sign) and is further supported by a sympathetic companion (Conjunct/Aspected by a Natural Friend). This creates a 'path of least resistance' for karma to manifest sweetly. Conversely, Kshobhita (Agitated) represents a planet under duress—specifically one that is provoked by the intense heat of the Sun or the friction of an enemy, while lacking the protection of a friendly sign. This renders the planet's energy erratic, reactive, and psychologically disturbed.
Practical Insight
The professional secret is that Kshobhita planets often govern areas of life where the client has 'buyers remorse.' They may successfully achieve the goal of the house (if the planet is strong), but the achievement brings anxiety rather than satisfaction. The remedy is 'Transference': You must consciously engage the significations of your Mudita (Delighted) planets to soothe the Kshobhita ones. If your Moon is Kshobhita (agitated mind) but your Venus is Mudita (delighted creativity), you must use art or relationship to settle the mind, rather than trying to fix the mind directly.
Go Deeper
Open your chart and locate the Sun. Is any planet conjoined with it? If so, check that planet's relationship to the Sun and the sign it is in—is it Agitated (Kshobhita) or merely Combust? Identify one area of 'Agitation' and one area of 'Delight' in your horoscope.
