Nakshatra 5: Mrigashira

The Essence

Mrigashira is the cosmic archetype of the 'Divine Search.' Where Rohini represents the settlement, Mrigashira represents the restlessness that follows—the sudden suspicion that the material world is not enough.

Attributes

  • Deity: Soma (Moon God)
  • Ruler: Mars
  • Symbol: Deer's Head
  • Gana: Deva (Divine)
  • Quality: Soft / Mild

Psychology

Gifts: Research, curiosity, gentleness, quick wit, and adaptability. They are the eternal students and explorers.

Shadows: Fickleness, suspicion, over-analysis, restlessness, and an inability to commit to one path.

Mythology

The myth of Mrigashira is a chase. Prajapati (the Creator) became obsessed with his own daughter, Ushas (the Dawn). To escape his illicit advances, she transformed into a female deer (Rohini). Prajapati turned into a male deer (Mrigashira) to pursue her. Seeing this violation of cosmic law, Shiva manifested as the hunter Rudra and fired an arrow that pinned the deer to the sky. Mrigashira represents this suspended state of 'The Chase'—the eternal hunting for a desire that is just out of reach, and the divine intervention that stops us before we cross the line.

Vocations

Research, travel industry, journalism, sales, textiles, forestry, and acting.

Relationships

Flirtatious and charming but may struggle with deep commitment. Needs intellectual stimulation and variety.

Guidance

  • Action: Nature walks (Shinrin-yoku) or feeding animals. Grounding the nervous energy is essential.
  • Deity: Parvati / Soma
  • Gemstone: Red Coral
  • Mantra: Om Somaya Namaha
